What Is Barrier Packaging?

Products protected by barrier packaging are all around us. Barrier packaging refers to materials such as plastic film that protect products from harmful elements or contaminants. It forms a barrier around sensitive goods to safeguard them from damaging external factors.

How Barrier Packaging Is Made and Used

Any plastic material used to cover or protect products with the purpose of creating a physical barrier between the contents and the outside can be described as barrier packaging. In some cases, coatings are applied to plastic materials to customize their permeability and create packaging that effectively protects the contents against specific elements like:

  • Oxygen
  • Moisture
  • Light
  • Oils
  • Aromas
  • Static

Barrier bags for packaging are especially useful in the food packaging industry, where they are an invaluable resource. Food packaged in barrier packaging stays fresher for longer while remaining protected from external contaminants.

What Are the Different Levels of Barrier Protection?

There are different levels of barrier protection packaging available. Barrier properties used to categorize packaging include transmission of molecular gas, water vapor and other types of organic solvents. Based on its performance, barrier protection packaging falls into four categories:

  1. Basic barrier, single layer: This food-safe packaging is suitable for general packaging requirements.
  2. Basic barrier, double layer: This design combines two single-layer barriers to produce more robust laminated packaging that offers greater moisture resistance.
  3. Moderate barrier: Materials commonly used at this level include PVC and PET. Moderate barriers protect against gases, moisture and aromas, and they can even help shield contents from UV light.
  4. High-performing barrier: Level four packaging includes multiple layers and offers an effective protective barrier against moisture, gases, odors, UV rays and visible light. This level of barrier packaging locks in product freshness and is excellent for goods such as coffee beans.

How to Choose the Right Barrier Packaging

The best barrier packaging for your product is one with a barrier level that will keep the contents fresh and protect them from harmful outside contaminants. Things to consider are the expected shelf life of the products and the cost of the packaging. Basic barrier packaging is usually suitable for nonperishable goods that don’t require defense against moisture or oxygen, while perishable foods often need higher protection. Barrier packaging typically becomes more costly with each additional layer, so it makes sense to choose a protection level that meets your needs without exceeding them.
